Tootsie (1982)
Such a classic comedy where I think Pinoy comic legends emulated Dustin Hoffman's performance. I think the reason why this was nominated for Best Picture was the fact that it empowered woman in a unique way although their image was a bit stereotypical. I cannot believe Jessica Lange won Oscar for a Supporting Role.
Simple yet a timeless story. Directed by the late Sydney Pollack.
Of course one of the best things about this film - "It Might Be You".

Enough Said (2013)
Beautifully made and acted. This is the first time I have seen TV actors James and Julia acted, never got the chance to watch their acclaimed works in television. They had a great chemistry, Dreyfus came very natural in her spiels.
It's about second chances of getting more of life and the persistence of happiness. Cliche but true, it doesn't matter what other people may think - it's your perspective that matters.
Supporting Julia in this movie are Toni Collette and Catherine Keener, both of whom I so adored. I know Toni is an Aussie but I was weirded out hearing her heavy accent.

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies (2014)
I have said it many times - Tolkien novels are monumental and the films are fine artworks but they are so exhausting.
This is the last installment of LOTR prequel and such a defining moment it is. The only reason I watched this last piece of the puzzle is because, well - it is the completion of this looooong journey of Bilbo Baggins.
To my own surprise, I liked it - it's not something that I would watch again though. Is it just me or there is a parallelism to land of Israel that I noticed of? I have to commend the love dynamics involving Legolas, Tauriel, and Fili.
Glad I was in the nick of time and closed this adventure before MMFF films start rolling.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Undeniably, Wes Anderson will join the ranks of Quentin, Martin, Steven, etc for being a visionary director/writer.
Unfortunately, I didn't appreciate most of his films. I mean they are good dark kind of way but I guess it's not just for me. I will still watch his films though, because they are interesting and artworks.
This film is about coming out of age of 2 young kids being in love with each other but that's the surface. Since this is an Anderson film, the real story I guess was about the supporting roles, being unhappy and miserable about their lives.
Since this is an Anderson film, expect an ensemble top-notch casts.

The Shining (1980)
"Here's Johnny!"
Another cinema classic from Stanley Kubrick and one of Jack Nicholson's famous role. This is based on Stephen King's novel of the same title.
Still scary but I think it would have been much creepier during its era just like The Exorcist in the 70s. There's an unexplainable weirdness to some extent but again this is Kubrick's art so I think it should be expected.
One of the problem I have with this film is it's just too long for a horror film, even for a King's novel. It could have been 90 minutes but the original version lasted for 140 minutes.
I think the next one of this crazy marathon is Misery by Kathy Bates.

Fatal Attraction (1987)
Film scared the shit out of me. Excellent.
Brilliant performances from Close and Douglas. Not being a sexist but sometimes it's fascinating to see women going berserk and psychopath, juicier and more terrifying.
Cheaters beware.

The Kids Are Alright (2010)
At last! It was a heart-warming movie about an unconventional family showing that love is love regardless.
Superb performances from Annette and Julianne, teared up several times especially the speech of Julianne regarding marriages and being together for too long. Mind you, it's not a drama movie, lots of funny moments too.
Mark did an amazing job too by adding some spice in the story.
Well done!
By the way, it was nominated for Best Picture in 2011's OSCARS.

Still Alice (2014)
Julianne Moore is one of the actors would love to see getting her Oscar. I have been a fan of her since The End of The Affair. I know Boogie Nights was one of her finest craft, that I have yet to see. I loved her in Far From Heaven and The Hours. Her portrayal of Sarah Palin was I think the highest point of her career earning her a Golden Globe and another Emmy.
Her acting discipline is quite different, silent but striking resembling to Nicole's skills. Either you hate or love it.
She's a four-time Oscar nominee and I think this role will give her the golden guy. There's not much of differences compared to her previous role but in this case, you can empathize with her character struggling with early onset of Alzheimer's disease.
Kirsten Stewart is being her in this film but mind you, she was great in her role - probably one of her finest.
It's a sad story but current and provides a peek to people experiencing the disease and being marginalized by society.

The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014)
Plot is predictable but just like an Indian dish, it's flavorful and delicious.
Dame Mirren shines as always and she steals every scene that she's in.
Feel good movie about family, life passion, and of course food.

The Theory Of Everything (2014)
2014 awards season here we come!
The Theory of Everything was based on the work of Jane Hawking taken from her personal experience with ex-husband famous physicist Stephen Hawking.
I had a bit of a challenge understanding some of the conversations bekeys theyr bri-ish. Hahaha!
The performances of Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones are to be reckoned with. Jones is being considered to lock the actress race, Redmayne is not far behind in the actors queue but that category is too crowded. I still hope he gets in.
The story is fascinating as this is based on true events to say the least. It worked with its dialogues and cinematography.
Huge chance of being one of the best pictures picks but Turing's biopic is way ahead of the race.

Exodus: Gods And Kings (2014)
This version was about grandeur.
Just like Noah, visually and all technical contributions were great in this film. The production team and outfit took liberties in interpreting the book of Exodus. They tried the scientific approach, it worked for the major part but for some - it needed a leap of faith. I am puzzled also with some inconsistencies on this version but I am not a bible expert. Some of the big names were underused.
I think the main challenge here was DeMille's "The Ten Commandments" and his monumental interpretation of Moses' story. It's more coherent and soap opera-ish. Especially for someone like me who has watched his film more than 20 times, I cannot help but to compare.
I don't even know how to erase the performances of Yul, Charlton, and Anne as Rameses, Moses, and Nefertiti in my head. Just pure perfection.
Now here comes Anne's voice "Moses, Moses, Moses".
Overall it's better than Noah but I think Hollywood should give up interpreting biblical stories.
